From the road near Waterend up the lane
past Askgill B&B. Along the track towards Wilkes How. At the
sheepfolds head uphill to Fellbarrow, around to Smithy Fell,
Sourfoot Fell, Watching Crag and Low Fell. Across to Darling
Fell and back down the slopes to the lane :
a gentle 4.6 miles as measured on memory map.
A chance to
revisit these fells as I was walking with someone who didn't
like anything too taxing. As it turned out my sports
suspension was too taxing and she cried off sick before we
even got to the base of Fellbarrow. The route is as
described on this same walk in
January so I won't bore you with anymore waffle - you
can compare and contrast the views on two very different
days. Needless to say they are fabulous and great reward for
not too much effort - the main vision is over to Whiteside
and Grasmoor, with Skiddaw quite distant. Down the valley
looking over Crummock Water and Buttermere are equally good
and possibly the best viewpoint is past the Low Fell summit
and all the way down to the south. There is a rocky knoll to
stand and gaze out upon a great vista. The walk down and up
to Darling Fell was still a royal pain but if you walk from
Waterend then there isn't really a way around it without a
big diversion. The final walk down off Darling Fell is very
steep as well - a real knee cruncher and it must be a bit
slippery in the summer months, so beware. It really is a
cracking little walk though - enjoy the pictures.
