Washington 2010

June

Weather: Sunshine

Route: not many

A long overdue trip to visit my brother-in-law and partner Kim in the good old US of A took us over to Washington DC for a tour of the City and it's many monuments. Now I'm not a city person of any sorts, although I can appreciate good architecture and enjoy the museum visits. Washington DC is obviously full of large important buildings, so we did a tour of them all. Martin had kindly bought us a metro pass, so moving around the city was relatively easy and stress free. In 10 days we visited most of the famous landmarks, didn't get arrested for doing 'brucies' in front of the White House, or for pulling Rooseveldt's finger. The highlight of the trip for me was an out of state visit to see the Luray Caverns in Virginia - they build them big in the States. For the first and probably only time we flew first class with United Airlines - a real experience courtesy of many air miles flown backwards and forwards to Aberdeen from Manchester. Due to the volcanic ash plume in Iceland our route passed over the southern edge of Greenland and we had fantastic views down over the snowy mountainous wastes. All in all a great trip, but next time I'll spend a bit more time outdoors - I did get to see some of the Appalachian Trail, the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia and a black bear.
